Chapters which make up this volume were delivered originally as a series of Lenten Lectures in the Church to which the author is attached. The text, taken down in shorthand at delivery, has seen been diligently revised, and some of the phrases incident to direct address have been eliminated. The topics treated of here stand in need of no apology. As themes they may be trite and threadbare enough from usage, but they cannot lose their importance with time. Every earnest mind wants to know about the things spoken of in these chapters.
